Standing balance is a good starting point, but almost every real fall happens while moving — stepping off a curb, turning to answer someone, reaching for something on a shelf. Dynamic balance drills close that gap by training control during movement, not just stillness.

These four drills progress from simple to more challenging; start with the first and add the next once it feels controlled and confident.

How to progress
Master one drill with confidence — no wobbling, no needing to grab for support — before adding the next. Practice near a wall until you're sure.

1. Walk with head turns

2 rounds of 10 steps

Walk in a straight line while turning your head to look left, then right, every couple of steps.

Why it works: Trains balance while your vision — a key balance input — is briefly disrupted, just like checking for traffic while walking.

2. Step-overs

8 reps per side

Place a low object (a rolled towel or shoebox) on the floor and step over it slowly, fully lifting your foot, then step back.

Why it works: Rehearses clearing curbs, thresholds, and uneven ground — a common cause of trips.

3. Multi-directional reaches

8 reaches per direction

Standing tall, reach one arm forward, then to the side, then behind you, going as far as feels controlled, near a wall for safety.

Why it works: Trains your balance system to keep you stable while your center of gravity shifts, like reaching into a cupboard or the back seat.

4. Turn and go

6 turns per side

While walking, practice a full 180-degree turn on command and continue walking in the new direction.

Why it works: Turning while walking is one of the highest-risk movements for falls; practicing it builds real-world confidence.

Make it stick

Two short sessions a week, 10 minutes each, are enough to see real change within four to six weeks.

Once these feel easy, try them on slightly softer or uneven surfaces like grass, always near support at first.

A note on safety
Always have a wall, counter, or sturdy furniture within reach when trying dynamic drills for the first time.
